In 2007, a company called Yeosulun was founded with just 50 million won in capital and two employees. It established a shopping site in Japan selling business cards, printed materials, and promotional items. By last year, it had grown to 80 employees with 8 billion won in annual revenue.
As the borderless consumer era approaches, companies can no longer afford to rely solely on the domestic market. The PC-based online shopping market in Korea has been shrinking annually.
Fortunately, companies like Yeosulun and EPIC Systems — which build their own independent shopping malls for direct overseas sales rather than using intermediaries — are emerging one by one. The key advantage of direct overseas sales is that, unlike reverse direct purchasing, they establish local entities that eliminate consumer concerns about delivery, returns, and refunds.
