EPIC Systems, a Korean electronic door lock distributor, originally exported products to buyers through the U.S. internet auction site eBay. Seeking to reduce fees, the company launched its own website (www.globalepic.net) to cut transaction costs and appeal directly to overseas "direct purchase" consumers.
The first year was challenging for marketing — the site was frequently pushed down in rankings on major search engines like Google. However, search traffic gradually increased, and the site began climbing to the top of Google rankings.
By focusing on cross-border e-commerce targeting overseas consumers, EPIC Systems achieved $450,000 in annual exports — accomplished with just 100,000 won in monthly website maintenance costs.
The Korea International Trade Association's research institute projected that cross-border e-commerce, characterized by direct consumer exports to neighboring countries, will grow as a new export method complementing traditional B2B buyer-centered trade.
